A medical doctor, Festus Aisabokhale, has been reported kidnapped in Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government council of Edo State. Aisabokhale, the Medical Director of Ofure Medical Centre, was reportedly kidnapped from his home on Wednesday night by unknown gunmen.
The latest kidnap incident has once again drawn the ire of doctors practising in the state and who were threatening to down tools in protest against the abduction of a colleague.
No contact has been reportedly made with the family of the kidnapped doctor or with the leadership of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) in the state. However, the police in Ekpoma said that they were aware of the kidnap and were monitoring development in that regard.
The state chairman of the NMA, Dr Philip Ugbodaga, said an emergency state executive council meeting of the association had been fixed for today to discuss the issue.
“We call on the abductors of Aisabokhale to release him unconditionally because we are not prepared to pay ransom for acts of criminality and they should know that this action has also denied many people of access to health care services from his hospitals and other doctors who are now tired of attending to unknown persons who may need medical attention for fear of being kidnapped,” Dr Ugbodaga added.
